Steve passed Arcata after several detours. It seemed to have weathered the quake with as much grace as any of the other towns he’d passed. Arcata was where Joy’s father and Justin’s parents worked; Steve wondered if they had been at work or at home during the quake. He worried about his own family, although—after living in California his entire life—he was rather nonchalant about quakes. Yes, they happened, and yes, they could be deadly, but loss of life was rare, especially if the quake was not located right in the middle of a populated area. This one had occurred out to sea.

Steve cleared the city without incident, remaining on the main highway the whole way. Although he was tempted to ask for news, he was too worried about his passenger to stop. He did have the radio though and listened for up-to-date announcements. No deaths so far. The authorities had enacted a tsunami warning as a precaution. Joy had been right—even though the initial quake had not produced a giant wave, aftershocks still might.

DeMartin Beach was the next landmark Steve encountered. Beyond that lay his dragon’s cave. Steve had not communicated with the dragon in weeks, and he did not sense him now. Still, if there was any chance he could get help for TJ, Steve felt he should try. Then he remembered that Jackie had been attacked there despite the great dragon’s magic. And what would he do with TJ while he investigated the cave? He could not leave him alone in the van, and he certainly not could lug him to the cave. Doubt and indecision. He felt it eroding his confidence, and he hated it. To hell with it, he thought.

The parking area for the beach was deserted—that made him feel better. Steve drove in slow circles, just to be sure. Satisfied, he backed into a parking space, so he could speed away if necessary. He turned off the engine and rolled down his window. Instantly, he could hear the rumbling surf and smell the briny air. The attachment to the sea was in his blood. Not only because generation after generation of his Portuguese ancestors depended upon it, but because Steve had woken up nearly every day of his life to the song of its waves, and to the funky smell of marine life. Justin had once explained that the smell was due to phytoplankton-eating bacteria, algae and worms, and seaweed sex, which his ten-year-old self had been alternatively repulsed and intrigued by; to be honest, his seventeen-year-old self felt the same way. Naturally, Justin had used the scientific terminology his parents preferred, words Steve could hardly pronounce let alone spell, words like dimethyl sulfide, bromophenols, and dictyopterenes.

Steve was going to miss his friend when he went off to college.

TJ snorted and brought Steve back to the present. Steve had come up with a compromise plan; he would get as close as he could to the cave without losing sight of the van. If Dragau was here, he’d be able to hear Steve even at that middling distance.
